Beyond the Basics: Demystifying the IVF Science Behind Surrogacy

The journey to parenthood through surrogacy is a profound and deeply personal one. While the emotional and legal aspects often take center stage, the scientific foundation – specifically, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – is the true engine of this miracle. For many intended parents, understanding the intricate scientific processes can feel daunting. At Atlas Surrogacy in Mexico, we believe in empowering you with knowledge. Let’s demystify the IVF science that makes dreams come true, explaining each critical step in clear, accessible language.

IVF: The Cornerstone of Gestational Surrogacy

At its heart, gestational surrogacy relies entirely on IVF. Unlike traditional surrogacy (which is illegal in Mexico), where the surrogate’s own eggs are used, gestational surrogacy means the baby has no genetic link to the gestational carrier. The embryo is created using the intended parents' (or donor) genetic material and then transferred to a gestational carrier’s uterus. This ensures a clear genetic lineage for the intended parents, making IVF an indispensable first step in the surrogacy journey.

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation and Egg Retrieval

The process begins with the biological mother (or egg donor) undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation. This involves a carefully monitored regimen of hormone injections designed to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs, rather than the single egg typically released during a natural cycle. Our expert fertility specialists in Mexico meticulously track follicle growth through ultrasound and blood tests. Once the follicles reach an optimal size, a 'trigger shot' is administered to induce final egg maturation. Approximately 36 hours later, a minimally invasive procedure called egg retrieval is performed under light sedation. Guided by ultrasound, a fine needle is used to gently aspirate the fluid and eggs from the ovarian follicles.

Step 2: Sperm Collection and Fertilization

Simultaneously, sperm is collected from the intended father or a chosen sperm donor. In the laboratory, the collected eggs are then combined with the sperm. Depending on the specific circumstances and sperm quality, two main fertilization methods are employed: conventional insemination (where eggs and sperm are simply placed together in a petri dish) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). ICSI is a more advanced technique where a single, healthy sperm is meticulously injected directly into each mature egg. This method significantly increases fertilization rates, especially in cases of male factor infertility, ensuring the highest chance of embryo creation for your surrogacy journey.

Step 3: Embryo Development, Culture, and Genetic Screening (PGT)

Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryos are carefully cultured in our state-of-the-art laboratory for several days. During this critical period, embryologists monitor their development, assessing their health and viability. Embryos are typically grown to the blastocyst stage (5-7 days post-fertilization), which is considered ideal for transfer due to higher implantation rates. At this stage, many intended parents opt for Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). PGT-A (aneuploidy) screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, which can reduce the risk of miscarriage and increase the likelihood of a successful, healthy pregnancy. PGT-M (monogenic) and PGT-SR (structural rearrangements) can also be performed to screen for specific genetic conditions. Atlas Surrogacy is committed to utilizing advanced screening techniques to maximize the chances of a healthy baby for our clients.

Step 4: Preparing the Gestational Carrier's Uterus

While the embryos are developing, our dedicated medical team prepares the gestational carrier’s uterus to be optimally receptive for embryo implantation. This involves a carefully orchestrated hormone regimen, primarily consisting of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen helps thicken the uterine lining (endometrium), creating a soft, nutrient-rich environment for the embryo. Progesterone then prepares the lining for implantation and supports the early stages of pregnancy. Ultrasound scans and blood tests are regularly performed to ensure the uterine lining reaches the ideal thickness and hormonal levels, synchronizing her body perfectly with the embryo’s developmental stage.

Step 5: The Embryo Transfer – A Moment of Hope

The embryo transfer is a pivotal and often emotional moment. It is a relatively simple, outpatient procedure that typically doesn't require anesthesia. Using a thin, flexible catheter, one or more selected embryos (usually one, as single embryo transfers are encouraged to reduce risks associated with multiples) are gently placed into the gestational carrier’s uterus, guided precisely by ultrasound imaging. Following the transfer, the gestational carrier continues her hormone support, and a period of anxious waiting ensues. Approximately 10-14 days later, a blood test (beta HCG) will confirm if pregnancy has been achieved.

Beyond Transfer: Ongoing Support and Monitoring

Once pregnancy is confirmed, the journey continues with meticulous monitoring of the gestational carrier’s health and the baby’s development. Regular check-ups, ultrasounds, and ongoing medical support are paramount. At Atlas Surrogacy, our comprehensive care extends throughout the entire pregnancy, ensuring the well-being of the gestational carrier and your future child, right up until the joyous moment of birth. We seamlessly blend cutting-edge IVF science with compassionate care, providing peace of mind every step of the way.
