How Gestational Surrogacy Works
Gestational surrogacy involves a surrogate — referred to as a gestational carrier — who carries a pregnancy on behalf of intended parents. The surrogate has no genetic connection to the child. The embryo is created using the intended parents' own genetic material or a donor egg and donor or intended father sperm, then transferred to the surrogate through an IVF procedure.
